Visitors from over 120 countries and counting! VIRTLANTIS is a free and open resource and community of practice for language learners and teachers in the virtual worlds of Second Life®, OpenSim and elsewhere. We offer free informal language learning activities for a growing number of languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Arabic, Romanian, and more!

Want to learn a language for free in Second Life?  No problem!  Have a look at the calendar below to find out about our current activities.  Offering an activity at VIRTLANTIS is an ideal way for teachers who are new to Second Life to get a feel for in-world language teaching - all levels of expertise are welcome! Non-teachers and non-native speakers are also encouraged to offer language exchange activities.

If you are just interested in having a conversation partner, please let us know. We're happy to help you connect with someone!

VIRTLANTIS, formerly referred to as "Second Life English", is a non-profit project of Oxford School for English, a language school located in Göppingen, Germany which has been in operation since 1965.

Oxford School for English has been actively promoting language learning in Second Life via the Second Life English, VIRTLANTIS, and other related projects, since 2006. Many of our members are therefore experienced in facilitating language learning within the virtual world of Second Life and are more than happy to offer friendship, pass on tips and provide support.

VIRTLANTIS is also proud to announce a recent partnership with the University of Western Australia!

More info can be found here in the group discussions.

You'll also find our activity calendar in-world at VIRTLANTIS.

New to VIRTLANTIS?

Feel free to contact any of the below volunteer contact persons for help when in-world.

Kip Yellowjacket (English, German, French)  | Wlodek Barbosa (English & Polish)  | Heimlaga Svenska (English, Finnish & Swedish) | Cata Charisma (English, Romanian)  | Abraxas McAndrews (English & German)  | Angel Tophat (English & German | Astra Martian (English & Italian)  | JB Beedit (English & Thai)

Please note: VIRTLANTIS is not a school.  We are a free resource and open community for language learners and teachers in Second Life.  All activities at VIRTLANTIS are free because they are offered by volunteer activity organizers.

Activity organizers benefit from the experience they gain while carrying out activities, and activity participants benefit from a regular offering of free informal learning experiences.  It's a win-win situation.

If you enjoy the activities at VIRTLANTIS and wish to give back or show your support,  please feel free to donate directly to the activity organizer(s) by paying Lindens via their profile, avatar, donation box, etc.

Activities at VIRTLANTIS are typically quite informal and relaxed.  People from countries all over the world come together to speak English and other languages. Everyone is welcome!

More info can be found here in the group discussions.
